Dewalt and Bosch offer two handheld routers, the DW618 and the 1617, respectively. Both routers offer excellent features, but we will be comparing them based on power, speed, and depth adjustment. We will base our decision on user skill level and project needs.
DEWALT DW618
The Dewalt DW618 is a handheld router. It features a detachable power cord, micro-fine depth adjustment, and a low noise level during operation.
The Dewalt DW618 is powered by a 2¼ hp, 12-amp motor. This motor is designed for speed and power. The base is made of machined, die-cast aluminum, making the router both lightweight and more durable.
It features a soft start. Also, it has a variable speed that helps maintain speeds under loads. Speeds range from 8,000 – 24,000 RPM.
The DW618 features a detachable power cord and a dust-sealed on/off switch. The switch is protected from accidental shut-offs during work.
It also features a micro-fine depth adjustment, allowing users to make changes of 1/64 inch and adjust vertically for a steady switch/cordset location. It comes with two collets, one that is ½ inch and the other is ¼ inch. The plunge base features a micro-fine depth adjustment of 5/128 inches.
The tool-free, adjustable steel motor cam lock makes base changes and depth adjustments quick. 95% of the dust is collected during operation, providing superior bit visibility. The router features quick-release motor latches that allow for quick and simple motor pack removal for bit and base changes. The cordset is detachable, offering serviceability and the ability to use the same motor pack for all bases.
When operating, the noise level of this router is very low. It can be attached to a router table as necessary. Additionally, if users need to plunge with the router, they can switch back easily with no need of removing the base. The plunge stroke is made smooth and accurate by precision-machined brass bushings and a case-hardened steel guide.
It comes with a fixed base, a plunge base, ¼-inch collets, ½-inch collets, a wrench, a sub-base concentricity gauge, a large hold sub-base, a vacuum adaptor, a heavy-duty kit box, and an owner’s manual. It is backed by a 30-day satisfaction guarantee.
BOSCH 1617
The Bosch 1617 is a handheld router. It features precision centering, a quick-change templet guide adapter, and a one-piece armature shaft.
The Bosch 1617 features an 11 A motor with a maximum speed of 25,000 RPM, which is unlike the Dewalt DW618’s 12A motor and a maximum speed of 24,000 RPM. They’re both handheld routers.
Designed to have precision centering, the 1617 has no problem keeping the bit on the intended outline when using dovetail fixtures, templets, jigs, and other guidance devices. It has a macro and microfine adjustment system for bit depth with a depth indicator that can be reset. This makes for a fast and exact depth adjustment.
There is a large 3¾ inch base opening and a 2-inch subwoofer opening that fits large bits. There is a left or right switch location based on user preference. Additionally, the motor is non-rotational during depth adjustment.
The armature shaft is one piece. This makes for good accuracy and long-bit capacity.
This router features a 10-foot rubber cord that’s flexible. Additionally, it has hardwood handles, which add beauty and comfort. It now includes a fixed base that offers the ability to adjust the bit height from over a router table. The fixed base has holes specifically for the optional mounting to a router table.
Additionally, users can opt to buy a fast-change templet guide adapter, which makes changing the templet guide fast and easy.
Also, the 1617 now features a dust-sealed power switch. It weighs 7.5 pounds.
It comes with a ¼-inch collet, ½-inch collet, 16 mm shaft wrench, 24 mm collet nut wrench, tool-free templet guide adapter, and a chip shield. It also features a 1-year limited factory warranty and a 30-day satisfaction guarantee.
Our Recommendation
Clearly, both routers offer fantastic features; however, we must delineate between the two before users make a purchasing decision. The Dewalt DW618 offers users two bases and very low noise when operating. We recommend this router for hobbyists and amateur woodworkers.
On the other hand, the Bosch 1617 offers users precision centering and a fixed base. We recommend this router for hobbyists and amateur woodworkers.
